The MPEG Immersive Video Standard—Current Status and Future Outlook

The MPEG immersive video (MIV) standard is the latest addition to MPEG-I suite of standards. It focuses on representation and coding media. MIV designed support virtual extended reality applications that require six degrees freedom visual interaction with rendered scene. Edition-1 now in its final phase standardization. Leveraging conventional 2-D codecs, efficiently codes volumetric scenes allows advanced effects like bullet-time fly-throughs. feeds capturing scene are first processed identify a set basic views augmented additional information from all other views. data then intelligently packed into atlases further compressed any existing codec choice. Experimental results show BD-PSNR gains up 6 dB 10–20 Mbps range compared naive simulcast multiview approach. This article concludes an outlook future extensions for second edition MIV.
